I have become friends with a shemale on a social media site I want to avoid sayin’ something stupid HELP Please.

Girls are taught how to be girls; Later in life some of us learn how to become women.

There are two important things you need to remember.

1. We’re all humans before we are woman, man, female, male or born in the wrong body, and in transition.

2. The cat needs to be let out of the bag to some extent, at least once, so you can get to know her preferences and so she knows she can be open with you.

Treat people respectfully, and you wont have to worry about offending someone easily no matter who they are. In this case, you go with what is Gender Apparent. Gender Apparent means, if they are talking like a specific gender, dressing like a specific gender and acting like a specific gender… they are that gender. Since you said you’ve met a shemale, use female pronouns and language.

ex) “Your hair is pretty today.” Not, “Dude, your hair looks more feminine today”.

You can avoid most blunders by sticking with common sense and keeping “Gender Apparent” in mind.

Unless, which brings me to point 2, if you’re wrong about her from the start.

You can tread lightly and ask in a sincere curious manner what they prefer. Most social sites don’t allow very specific click boxes and they could have just chosen “shemale” for lack of better words to describe themselves.

Ask about who they are, and their journey, and how they identify best so you can use better vernacular. Just explain they are “your first” and you want to be friends with them because you feel they are awesome for rockin’ out how they truly feel. That you do not want to offend them and you’d like to know how to be a better friend.

I can’t tell you how to not offend your new friend, because I could be wrong too. Therefore you can have one small chat about how they feel so you basically never have to do it again (if they don’t offer the info freely on an ongoing basis).

Ex) I’ve met GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning–etc) people who prefer gender neutral pronouns (scroll down for the GNP chart). They would get highly offended if you would forget that THEY wanted you to use GNP for them; yet it wasn’t a part of my every day. But I did it, because, well, just because. It became something I remembered to do, as if I was cooking for a friend allergic to onions… I’d omit onions from the recipe or make something different.

I’d be annoyed if I didn’t like to be called something and people kept saying it. There are MANY words people have given, invented, and identify better with to “label” themselves… and they are just words… but some have grown quite attached to them.

How we identify is a large part of how we go about our day – most of us – without even thinking about it. If you’re male, you use the men’s room, you put on men’s clothing, it is ok for you to walk around topless and people don’t care if you don’t shave your legs. If you’re in transition, you have to consciously make these decisions until it becomes routine and you’re comfortable with doing them in being more “yourself”.

Having friends and people around you who accept you, as you, is important to us all. We all inherently want to be liked for who we are despite how we- our beliefs, attitude, sexual preferences, political views, attire- may differ from someone else’s let alone how society dictates it “should” be.

But… we’re all different, we’re all rebels… just like everyone else. We’re “only human” in the end.

Good luck with your new friendship, learn from each other, and just be yourself. Like I said, in the end, we all just want to be accepted for being ourselves so the less emphasis you put on differences, the more they wont matter. Just… be friends.

5. Isn’t it possible that all you need is a good gay lover?

Sexlopedia: Transgender Terminology!

Recently I’ve come across a lot of hate and misunderstanding against trans peoples. This wouldn’t really bother me but it came from a very unexpected place – my friends and family that are Gay or Lesbian. A few trans friends of mine go to the gay-friendly clinic in Manhattan, and the stories they come back with are just bad. Sometimes they are ignored for hours, or referred to as “it”. Not that I think it would be any different in a heterosexual/hospital clinic, but you would think gays would be more understanding of people who choose an alternative lifestyle.

Anyway, I want to take this opportunity and use my voice with JB to define some transgendered terms. I’m going to borrow some from pages I found from SoCal Univeristy’s LGBTCenter – they had the simplest definitions I could find – I’ve paraphrased a good deal of it but here goes:

Biological sex: Used to identify genetic, biological, or physical characteristics of a person. Penis, vagina, or both (intersex). Biological sex and Gender are two different things.

Gender: Social and psychological label that define a person based on feminine or masculine characteristics. Examples: “That guy is a man’s man!” “She wears the pants in that family!” or “He is really in touch with his feminine side.”

Gender Identity: A term used to define how one sees their own gender…this usually always matches with Biological sex…so if you have a penis you see yourself as a guy, but is not always the case. Gender identity is one’s self of sense and the image you present of yourself to the world.

Gender Role: How a person of a certain biological sex is expected to act. Boys play with GI Joe, girls play with dolls. Men provide the financial security, and women tend to the household. These traditional gender roles have been changing very quickly over the past decade, with more and more women becoming the “breadwinners” and men taking up more household roles traditionally done by women. Typically society defines what is for men and what is for women, 50 years ago a man would have been lynched for wearing makeup…now Emo boys and celebrities use eye liner before they leave the house.

Transgender or Trans: A term used to describe anyone who does not fit the “normal” accepted gender role or goes against their bio-sex. These terms are used as sort of an umbrella, catching everything from cross-dressers, transvestite, to transsexual.

Transsexual: Someone who has felt for a long time that their assigned biological sex is wrong.

Cross-dresser: A person who on occasion wears clothing traditonally associated with the opposite biological sex or gender role. A girl wearing a suit, or a boy wearing a skirt. Sometimes it is done for erotic gratification. Most cross-dressers identify as heterosexual, whatever they identify as their gender role or identity. So you can have a very masculine, muscle bound fellow in a pink tu-tu who sleeps with women, or a twiggy, flat chested girl that dresses like a paperboy and sleeps with guys. I only give those example because they make me chuckle. :)

Phew! Well that was a lot of stuff. I think a lot of people are slowly coming around that biological sex does not define your role in society anymore. And that, in my opinion, is a very good thing. Next time I define some more stuff I’ll get into hormone therapy pre/post ops, FTM, MTF, and all that stuff. I didn’t include here because really I don’t know enough about those yet.

Dear Jane,

Is a girl still a virgin if she’s only had it in the butt?

Controversy strikes again!

Many people feel that only penis in vagina sex = a woman losing her virginity. In some countries the hymen must be broken by a penis to have their virginity lost. Then, there are the “technical virgins”, women who have done everything but vaginal penetration … and I do mean butt.

Plus, of course, the GLBT arguments of what counts as losing one’s virginity if there isn’t a penis OR vagina involved in the equation.

To answer your question though…Yes, she is still a virgin since the definition of a virgin is technically a woman who has never had intercourse; someone who is untouched. The implied form of intercourse is of course, vaginal.

I don’t feel comfortable in supporting the technical answer though. It has come about by “abstinence only” teachings and scare tactics, our hang-ups on defining EVERYTHING and our innate ability to find exceptions to rules. All of which, do more damage than good.

Young adults are dieing because they caught an STD, but are technically still virgins – not good.

If the current economic turmoil and high unemployment crisis made you choose between eating this week or keeping the internet on, you may have missed the story of Tyler Clementi. Tyler, an 18 year old Rutgers University student jumped off the George Washington Bridge and washed up dead. Why? During a sexual encounter romp he was secretly taped by his roommate, who aired it live over Skype. So what’s the big deal you might be asking? Was his form bad? Was he a fatty? Small dick? The “issue”, which should be a non-issue, is that Tyler was a closeted young gay man. We know that his family did not know about his homosexuality, and that his roommate was planning to catch Tyler on camera and stream it online a second time.

No one has come forward yet to tell us that they were a confidant of Tyler’s, we may never know what emotions or feelings were going through his head, but if he was like the any of the estimated millions of young gay men who are not out about their sexuality, Tyler was afraid, shamed, stressed and confused.

Rutgers, being in such close proximity to that liberal elitist homo-friendly and tempt-tatious New York City, should have a friendly gay scene. And, low and behold, Rutgers University has a history (since 1969 ) of many clubs and LGBTQ organizations. We also know Tyler thought his hookup session was going to be broadcast the second time; he approached his RA and started the official University policy to put a stop to what was going on. No one thinks his voyeuristic roommate had pure evil or homophobic tendencies, or that outing Tyler would be the factor that pushed him to suicide, but really Dharun Ravi, that kind of immaturity should have been left at high school, and even there it’s never appropriate. “Like, OMG, there are TWO DUDES KISSING, guys you gotta’ check this out! What homos!”

And three paragraphs in, here’s my point: To have a positive sexual health, you need to be mentally, physically and spiritually prepared to accept and live as who you are. That’s why we grow up. That’s why we have adolescence. That’s why psychologists are classifying twenty-something’s as “young adulthood”. According to Erik Ericson,

“The young adult must develop intimate relationships with others. Not resolving this conflict leaves the young adult feeling isolated. The young adult must be willing to be open and committed to another individual”.

We take our developing years to shape ourselves and learn who we are and how to stand on the inside, its your very own journey through life. Tyler had just started to explore outside his normal boundaries at home. Being on his own he could discover who he was, and since he was outed before he was mentally, physically and spiritually ready Tyler made the end it all decision because he was not prepared for that growth yet.

Think of it in terms of your body being in shock or trauma – but instead of a wound on the outside or in your circulatory system, it’s of the mind and inside the spirit. Instead of your body shutting off and breaking down, your mind shuts down and your sense of self dies… your consciousness floats away and you have nothing left of yourself…all of a sudden a short fall off an ugly bridge isn’t a bad idea at all. This is what happens when someone else forces your mind-body-spirit growth. And this doesn’t just happen with being outed as a homosexual, it happens to those who are molested, people who are raped, those who may be coerced by a significant other to perform sex acts, runaways who resort to survival sex, etc. It all affects us differently and to varying degrees, some to the point of shutting down emotionally, others to a place where sex becomes just a tool, and in the case of Tyler to the end of your life.

At the end of the day we all need to realize that having a positive sexual health is paramount to having a sexual identity and peace of mind, and no one ever should violate the sanctity of someones journey. I can easily picture a future where Tyler gets to explore who he is, has his ups and downs, eventually meets someone nice who convinces him to come out to his parents, and whether or not they are cool with that, everyone is alive and continuing their journey. But because people still play games like “Hurt the Homo” and “Whack the Whore” and because we still have a vocal prudish community of people shouting out at the top of their lungs “Sex is BAD and IMMORAL and you should feel bad for liking it, and all the homo-gays are going straight to Hell!” it makes it extremely difficult for everyone to complete their own identity.

A New Jersey college student, who police believe was secretly — and illegally — filmed in a dorm sexual encounter, indicated on Facebook that he planned to jump off a prominent New York City bridge before he took his own life, the Star-Ledger reported online.

A family lawyer confirmed Wednesday that 18-year-old Tyler Clementi killed himself by jumping from the George Washington Bridge. The attorney, Paul Mainardi, said Clementi was “a fine young man and a distinguished musician.”

Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, changed his Facebook status to “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry” on Sept. 22, the Star-Ledger reported, though his full profile isn’t public so that couldn’t be independently confirmed.

This news broke just yesterday, and I’m thoroughly disgusted, and saddened by this.

Invasion of privacy, hate crime, suicide, NJ, 2010 … in college???

I expect a little more from (supposedly) more “liberal” places and times in a person’s life. College is supposed to be a space away from home and judgement so you can explore and learn… mostly about yourself. Yet again, this is another reason why I am who I am today, and why I do what I do.

I don’t wish ill on people, but I really hope the two people who taped Tyler and then splattered it all over the internet… are reminded of what the consequences of their actions were… for the rest of their lives.

Look, I’m not trying to be preachy or even remotely PC but I think certain things should be thought about before spoken. I am all about making racist, sexist, & any other -ist jokes I can think of, when it’s in good fun. I have an offensive sarcastic personality.

I do however think that calling someone a name that refers to their people being burned alive is a little over the line. If you hate gay people & feel they’re all going to hell (I’m surprised you’ve read this far!), I’m not trying to change your mind, I don’t care what your tiny little brain thinks.
